Alleged site of a fortified, moated, manor house which in turn was on the site of a castle.

The Vine House was a strongly built place with walls and foundations of great thickness (in very early times a castle) surrounded by a moat on three sides, and on the fourth flanked by a river.' (Beds N. and Q.)

Vine Farm was so-called because it was the site of a vinery belonging to Astwick Manor in the 15th century.

(The River Ivel is nowhere closer than 350m. to Vine Farm). (PastScape)

Gatehouse Comments

The site is isolated from modern settlement. It is clear that the river has been canalised and moved and may well have been much closer to the house at one time. However this must remain a doubtful site with a dubious and possibly fanciful history of fortification, beyond a moat.
