Round Hill, Hallgarth. A clearly man-adapted mound with steep sides and a level summit, identified as a possible burh of the pre-Conquest territorial unit of Stirkland. (PastScape–ref. Higham)

Perriam & Robinson report J Marsh as writing 'This is a contentious designation; the Garth is of Helsfell Hall nearby.'

Gatehouse Comments

There are no end of round glacial mounds in this area. There 'man made' appearance is often no such thing and the suggestion made in PastScape of a link between the name 'round hill' and human activity or settlement is not one fully supported. Higham's, otherwise excellent, article is marred by the attribution of several such mottes. The development of a housing estate around the mound has emphasised this mound, tending to make it look even more unnatural.
