No 1 Golden Square, house on west side of entry to Golden Square. From the very considerable thickness of the walls and the massive boulder plinth, this is clearly a bastle, although the exterior is all rendered and all visible features are 20th century; the building is not listed. Externally its dimensions appear to be 8.75m by 6.5m. Removal of render would probably disclose original architectural features; it is also possible that an early roof structure survives (Ryder 1994-5). (Northumberland HER)
