Thompson lists as a residential manor of the Bishop of Coventry and Lichfield. Certainly a large manor of the bishops and recorded as hosting a visit of Edward I in 1275. Ormerod records a large fire in the town in 1752 which, fanned by a high wind, burnt most of the town and, presumably whatever remained of the palace, to the ground.
