Earthwork remains of an alleged C12 medieval motte about 12 feet high. It comprises an oval mound which measures a maximum of 48m long by 29m wide and is orientated roughly east / west. No associated features such as a bailey are visible on the available aerial photographs. (PastScape)

Gatehouse Comments

Perriam & Robinson dismiss this as a natural feature on the basis of a site visit and a comment that there would not be two mottes so close together in the same manor. This is not the manorial centre but it is is a position that controls a river crossing and by a water mill site so may have been an outwork to Irthington or a mound of a sub-manor. It certainly is rare for two mottes to be in the same parish (and a parish is not always the same as a manor) but it does happen. Irthing House occupies the possible site of any attached court. However, pending further information, has to be questionable.
