Clwyd Powys Archaeological Trust record of ? medieval castle reads 'Name applied to crest of escarpment adjacent Dyfed-Powys border. Probably relates to natural feature though may be indicative of a defended site. No relevant antiquities noted by OS, 1976.'

Gatehouse Comments

Moorland mountain area, at heart of Brecon Beacons, not the place for any site of habitation except the most temporary retreat. Steep cliffs make this a natural fortress, which is clearly what the placename refers to.
