An old Clwyd Powys Archaeological Trust record of ? motte read 'Name indicative of a mound. Possible relates to natural feature (RCAHM archive). CPAT site visit 1981 notes a mound but fails to give any useful detail.' The newer record add 'There is a hummocky "ridge" to the west of the lake below Buckland Hall, with the land falling steeply to the Usk further to W. There is no trace of an archaeological feature. The lake has been formed by damming what appears to be an old meander in an abandoned river course, now some way above the river. (CPAT 2003)' but now classifies the site as a U mound.
