Gatehouse Comments

Ingham list this as a fortified house and writes "regarded as an interesting fortified house of the 13th century, once the home of the Scropes" This seems to be wrong in almost all accounts, the house is not fortified, is of C15 date and belonged to the Wyvill family; the Scropes held the neighbouring estate of Masham but not this manor. This may be a confusion or confabulation with Bolton Old Hall, Burton on Swale which was a fortified house owned by the Scropes although this is not C13 either. However Ingham does separately mention that house.
