Possible site of pele tower. A pele is recorded 'near The Nursery', but no trace of a such a structure survives in its vicinity.

Peel tower near "The Nursery" (MS List in Museum of Ants Newcastle).

"The Nursery" is at NY 910758. No peel tower can be located in the vicinity, and there is no local knowledge of one. Possibly a reference to Money Hill. (NY 97 NW 12) (F1 DS 9.10.66). (PastScape)

It has been suggested that a fortified tower stood near this site, but there is no evidence for one. The original report may have been confused. (Keys to the Past)

Gatehouse Comments

The archaeological databases locate this at NY910758 but 'The Nursery' is a building at NY90777563. This is close to the motte and bailey castle Money Hill. Although it seems likely the original reference was probably referring to the motte castle there are still some questions worth asking. Was there a successor building to the castle? What form did it take? The manor house may have moved to Gunnerton nearer the chapel but even after such a move did the bailey buildings have a continued existence as a tenanted farmstead?
