The farmhouse is probably a bastle derivative. There is no positive evidence to be seen and records are hazy, but parts of the building date from bastle building times and its construction suggests that it was a fortification. (Dodds 1999)

Gatehouse Comments

The farmhouse is not recorded in the archaeological databases and it is unclear where Dodds is getting his information. Dodds is not a buildings historian. However the farm is surrounded by rig and furrow suggesting it is the site of a farmstead of age and in this location a C17 farmhouses is likely to have been of the pele-house bastle form.
