On the bases of this place name Salter suggests this was a moated or fortified site. Called Moat Farm on 1887 OS map and small square moat marked, which is no longer evident on aerial photo. Recorded in PastScape as "Medieval homestead moat which was dry when surveyed in 1971 and was destroyed some time before 1988. The moat ditch is obscured by trees on the available aerial photographs."

The dry homestead moat centred at SO 72962106 is 56.0m ENE-WSW and 46.0m NNW-SSE. The two southern sides remain as a ditch averaging 1.0m deep; the WSW side having been partly destroyed at the west angle. The two northern arms are similar but they have a retaining bank which attains a height of 1.6m in the NNW. A modern cut has been made through the north angle which is now overgrown. (PastScape ref. 1954 OS map annoted record)

Gatehouse Comments

Isolated position and apparent relatively low status. Rejected by Gatehouse as clearly a homestead moat with only passive defences of insufficient quality to be called a fortification.
