Gatehouse Comments

This site has been considered by some writers to be a castle but is rejected as such by Hogg and King as a farm on a completely indefensible hillside. However, Davis writes a 'tumulus' once existed here and speculates this may have be a motte. If so the motte may have symbolic and representational of the military service owed by the farm's tenant and 'defensibility' would not be an issue.
