Probably a mine spoil tip, one of many large mounds in the area of the Dolaucothi mine complex. It has in the past been suggested to be a Norman motte. (Dyfed Archaeological Trust HER)

Gatehouse Comments

There is also a slight possibility that this might be a Roman spoil tip later reused as a motte. However, whilst there may have been some residual gold prospecting here in the medieval period but it is questionably this was of sufficient intensity to warrant the expense of a castle. See also Carreg Pumsant, another spoil heap of this mine suggested as a motte.
