A steep-sided & flat-topped circular ditched mound, some 32-4m in diameter & 3.6-4.2m high, having a summit area about 17m across, showing no sign of further works: the ditch about the southern side of the mound sometimes holds water. (Coflein)
A well preserved motte standing 5m above the surrounding moat. The circumference of the motte top is 22m. The moat is 7m wide and 2m deep and water filled in part. There is no sign of a bailey although Helen Burnham, 1987 has suggested that a kink in the track to the south of the site may reflect a former boundary. The monument comprises the remains of a motte and ditch, dating to the medieval period (c. 1066 -1540 AD). A motte is a large conical or pyramidal mound of soil and/or stone, usually surrounded by either a wet or dry ditch, and surmounted by a tower constructed of timber or stone. Castell Nant-y-Garan is a steep-sided and flat-topped circular mound, c.33m in diameter and c.4m high. The summit is c.20m across, while the ditch, the northern two-thirds of which is wet, is c.7m wide and 2m deep below the surrounding ground level. There is no sign of any related bailey.
