Very worn down ringwork, 41m in diameter and 1.8m high, possibly the "Castellum Waynardi/Waynard's Castle" of the mid C12. (Coflein)

Gatehouse Comments

Waynard's Castle is an unidentified castle mentioned in mid C12 Charter, near Talgarth, identified as possible Trefecca Fawr by Remfry and as either Trefeca, Trefeca fawr or, most favoured, Garn y Castell by King. It should be noted the C12 Charter account is of the 'castle' as a boundary marker and does not specify medieval date or occupation of the site, although the description as 'Waynard's castle' does strongly suggest this. It is suggested it is named after Walkelin Visdelon whose father, Humphrey, accompanied Bernard de Neufmarché in his conquest of Brycheiniog and who appears to have been granted the manor (Clwyd Powys Archaeological Trust). Presumably, regardless of whether this was Waynard's castle or not, this was a farmstead, held by military service, and built in a form that symbolised that tenurial status.
