Structure in Squirrel Castle Plantation (W. edge of) N. Wingfield, S. of Dog Kennel Pond, and just SE of a surviving stretch of the miles-long Roman Rigg, a major linear earthwork. As Field points out ('English Field Names') indicative of a ruin infested with animals of a certain type. (Sneyd 1995)

Gatehouse Comments

On the boundary of the Wentworth Woodhouse Parkland. This C18 park was particularly noted for its 'gothick' garden follies of which the most notable is Stainborough Castle (see Andy Hemingway's essay The lost towers of Worsbrough Common for a discussion of the numerous C18 gothick castellated follies of the Wentworth and rival Wentworth Woodhouse estates). However, I'm unable to identify this 'Squirrel Castle' as the location of a park feature.
