Fieldname 1540 (PNWR - "this would seem to be a compound of old Norse veggr wall (used the names of ancient works..) and 'castel', fortification.." also Le WEST HAGE 'west enclosure' - PNWR. In view of association elsewhere of 'ring' with earthwork fortifications Ring Farm SE 389 079 may be of relevance. (Sneyd 1995)

Gatehouse Comments

Given map reference for Ring Farm. It would be useful to known exactly where this recorded fieldname was actually located but, regardless,it seems unlikely it referred to a medieval fortification. It may just possibly, have referred to a lost small pre-historic enclosure, one, perhaps, with stone revetted banks (c.f. Stainborough Castle.
