Little Shepherd's Castle. Small, steep, conical hill, N. shore of Winscar Reservoir, A defensible site no apparent indications of defences. (Sneyd 1995)

Gatehouse Comments

Long Shepherd's Castle, an adjacent placename marked on the 1st edn 6" OS map of 1906, is a slightly larger natural hill to the east. Neither place seems likely as the site of any type of high status residence. Gatehouse suspects place-names of use to drovers in navigation over this moorland, although a lost small shepherd's hut with an ironic name is not impossible.
