Aldwarke - SE Rotherham, NW. R. Don, this area of industry bears a name indicative of early fortification - "Old" and "Work", often used of defensive structures. This may refer to the moat, vanished with Aldwark Hall, but shown on 1st OS at SK448949 or to an earlier site. (Sneyd 1995)

Gatehouse Comments

Gatehouse can't see the suggested moat on the 1st edn 6" OS map. The area was built over in relatively recent times but no record exists in the archaeological database of a moat, of Aldwick Hall or of anything that may have been an 'Old Work'. Aldwark is a place name associated with fortifications, although often pre-historic, and is, therefore, unlikely to refer to a moated house.
