"Bat's Castle" printed on OSAD 6" map. Circular bank or flat topped mounds with possible square mound. Classified as a military castle, but may be a hillfort (doubtful), folly or anything (Dennison, E, Somerset County Council. 29/6/1984). (Exmoor National Park HER)

Gatehouse Comments

This is the given map reference in the Exmoor National Park HER and is marked Bat's Castle on the OS map. Over 3km SW of Dunster Castle, which was besieged, so might be a siege work but more likely, if medieval, to be a feature of the hunting park. A much larger better preserved earthwork, also called Bats Castle, lies 1km S of Dunster Castle (SS98824214). This is classified as an Iron Age univallate Hillfort (PastScape Hob no 36896) with no suggestion of medieval use.
