A licence to crenellate was granted, in 1264, to Ralph de Bakepuz, who seems to have been a royal courtier but is otherwise missing from the historical record and can not have been a significant figure.

Gatehouse Comments

His house can not have been the Cheddar palace but some other manor in the parish; there seem to have been four altogether. Unfortunately the presence of the palace has rather overwhelmed the archaeological record of the parish and the historic records are incomplete. Gatehouse has not identified Ralph's manor. The given map reference is for the parish church although it is likely that Ralph's manor was some distance from the church.
