Emery writes 'In 1487 John Guldeford received a licence to crenellate his manors of Brockley, Halden, Hawridge and Tenterden in Kent.' The Calendar of the enrollment reads 'crenellate the manors or tenements of Halden, Tenterden, Brockle and Hertrigge, in the parishes of Rolvenden, Tenderden, Crambroke and Ebney, co. Kent'

Gatehouse Comments

The last two parishes seem to have been swapped and this may be the manor of Hartridge in Cranbrook parish. Hasted gives a tenurial history of Hartride (sic) which may exclude it being a Guldeford property but also notes "THERE is an estate adjoining southward, once part of the above, called Lower Hartridge. It now belongs to Mr. Abraham Walter." He gives no other tenurial history for this Lower Hartridge manor. The Guldefords were linked to the Wilsfords of Hartridge via marriage (although that could be said of almost any Kent family of property). Was it possibly the Lower Hartridge manor started as a dower estate? Was the Hartridge manor briefly held by the Guldefords at the height of their political power before returning to the original owners? Hartridge Manor at TQ77473983 is a grade II listed farmhouse dating back to the C17 which is presumably on the site of the medieval Hartridge manor house.
