Gatehouse Comments

Probably an archaic spelling of Longdon (or a misreading of the latin scribal hand) and for this to refer to Beaudesert Hall. Payne has come to this conclusion. However in a grant of free warren to the manors of the bishop made in 1259 Langedon and Beaudesert are separately listed suggesting two adjacent but distinct manors. However it seems unlikely that the bishop would have required a residential manor house at Longdon with either his palace at Lichfield or Beaudesert Hall so close. The village was fairly dispersed but, presumably, the stewards house was near the church at the given map reference.
