Saxon burh of Maldon, built in 916. A settlement or estate was extant when Edward stayed there in 912 during the construction of the burh at Witham. It is thought that the burh was used as a temporary refuge. (PastScape)

Despite the comment by Bond it should be noted that Maldon remained an important town, with a mint, well into the C12 so defences may well have maintain some significance. Defences recorded in 1740 as a square vallum on west side of town.
