Gatehouse Comments

This site, well to the north of Ipswich, has been suggested as the documented Ipswich castle. This is the site of a Roman Villa and probably gained it's name from a misinterpretation of these ruins. The site has been subject to archaeological investigation and there are no reports of medieval finds (although the focus of these investigations was Roman). This can safely be rejected as the site of Ipswich castle but it is just possible this might be the site of a siege castle from the 1152 siege.
