Marked 'site of castle' on OS maps.

A small flat topped grass covered knoll, a good site for a defensive work. Little on the ground however, except a faint scarp. No documentary evidence except a field called 'castle' on tithe map. No visible remains. No historical evidence for a castle here. (Devon and Dartmoor HER ref. Higham 1979)

The indicated reference is on top of a small flat-topped grass- covered knoll which would have been a good site for a defensive work. However there is little on the ground to suggest any kind of earthwork except on the east side where there is a faint and unsurveyable scarp of 0.2m height. No documentary evidence could be found to support the published entry except for the Tithe Map where the field is named "Castle". (PastScape–Field Investigators Comments-F1 JGB 16-NOV-78)

Gatehouse Comments

Hill top site, isolated from settlement. There is nothing to suggest this site having been particularly intensively ploughed so had there been anything significant here one would expect more than a slight scarp. The tithe map name does need to be accounted for. Was this the site of a modest folly, possible one purely of timber?
