Site of manor house, built before 1333 and subsequently demolished. Only the medieval water gate survives. A licence to crenellate was granted 1333-4. The site is now occupied by a country house built 1767-8. (PastScape)
Water gate. Said to be medieval. Roughly-dressed well-coursed masonry largely overgrown by ivy. Central segmental archway with inner recess for doors leads to flight of 7 stone steps. Flanking central turrets from one of which it is said Oliver Cromwell fired the first swivel-cannon gun in England. The whole is surmounted by large carved wooden crucifix.
