Gatehouse Comments

Not recorded in the archaeological databases. This is an area of old coal pits and ironstone quarries. Church does not seem to be medieval and does not seem to be an area of medieval settlement, although I expect the mining activity dates back to medieval times. Gatehouse suspects this is actually a spoil tip of which a good number can be seen in the immediate area on the air photo, alternatively the mound may just represent the spoil from grave digging and/or from digging out the foundations of the church.
