Gatehouse Comments

Clark's reference may well be to Broncroft castle, although, in the same passage, he separately mentions this as Braincoft Castle. This does not appear to be a suggestion derived from a primary medieval source of any type. It could be a corruption of the welsh Bro y meron - vale of 'meron' or merely an example of some idiosyncratic spelling or transcribing error (Gatehouse suspects much of Clark's source material came from private correspondence, some of dubiously quality.) The is no Broymeron; Bro y meron or similar placename in the OS placename gazetteer. Can be rejected as a separate, otherwise unrecorded castle. Given map reference for the parish church of Tugford.
