West Newbiggin, Originally called Newbiggin, was the seat of the manor. A survey of 1561 mentions a tower there, in good repair, with a "Barmkin about it" (Raine: Bates). West Newbiggin, now a farm, is entirely 19th C. Neither the house nor its outbuildings incorporates any visible remains of the tower, and there are no apparent traces of the barmkin (F1 ECW 09-MAY-67). (PastScape)
