Mellom Cottage was built on the site of a bastle which is shown in a late 19th century photograph in a state of decay. It appears to have been of one build with West Farm Cottage (NY 86 NW 46). It had a byre doorway at the east end of its south wall, and its upper doorway a little further west, both with square heads and chamfered surrounds (Ryder 1994-5). (Northumberland HER)
