King writes there was a possible burgus enclosure of the castle.

Gatehouse Comments

King generally used the term 'possible' for doubtful sites. The evidence for a defensive enclosure of the town, or even part of the town, is weak. Nothing in the relatively early VCH entry suggests a burgus enclosure. The presumably area for a burgus enclosure would be NE of the Bishop of Durham's castle and palace up to the parish church (at given map reference). This area, although mainly still open, has been extensively changed by its use as a palace and later as a graveyard.
