Between 1536-43 Leland saw at Aldbrough, two miles south of Piercebridge 'great ruins of a house or little castle.' Possibly C13 manor house of Harsculph de Aldborough.
There appere great ruines in a valley of a howse or a litle castel at Albruch village, and thereby rennith a bekke. It standith a ii miles south from Perse Bridg on Tese. (Leland quoted in VCH)
