Unidentified castle reported by Leland, perhaps Chilham, perhaps Rochester. (King)

Sum say that the castelle of Rose in sum evidence is caullid Joseph's Castel. Rose Castelle. Ex Chronico ecclesiae Christi Cantuar. Matildis, Henrici primi mater, restituit castellum de Rosa Cantuar. ecclesiae. (Looke that this be not Chilham Castel that ons the Lorde Ros had.) (Leland)

Gatehouse Comments

This is almost certainly a lost name for a known castle rather than a lost castle but which castle. Leland's lists would exclude Dover, Folkstone, Chilham and Saltwood. Rochester was a castle given to the see of Canterbury and had major building tempus Henry I and would seem the most likely candidate. It should also be noted the Latin for Rochester is Rof-, which could, with the long scribal f often used be readily transcribed as Ros- (with the various Latin tense endings). However, Leland's somewhat longer description of Rochester (p. 57-8) does not illuminate this entry.
