Gatehouse Comments

Blacknor (Black Nore or, as this is a chalk headland, possibly originally blanc nore) is the name of a coastal headland, not a settlement. Gatehouse is not able to identify the area known as 'castles' at, or near, the map reference given by Wilton. The 1142 castle is normally considered to be the early version at Bow and Arrow. Blacknor 'castle' was, either, a part of the castle demense or a name given to a bit of cliff to aid coastal navigation. Unlikely to have been a fortified site.
