On the east side of the Wigton-Cockermouth road, almost opposite to the lodge of Whitehall, is an artificially raised area some 70 ft square, surrounded by a deep moat, 44-50 ft wide. The upcast from the moat has been thrown out on both sides, thus increasing the height of the plateau, and forming an external rampart - the eastern side of which has been levelled by ploughing (Curwen).

This may have preceded the pele and house at Whitehall to the north. (PastScape)
