Gale Hall, the site of which is occupied by a modern farmhouse, was formerly the capital messuage of the manor of Gale, and contained a tower, demolished since 1677. (PastScape ref. Perriam and Robinson)
'the house of Anthony Hutton Esqr built Towerwise and that not long since either by Sir Wm Hutton this gentleman's great grandfather or else by the said Sir William his father Anthony...' He goes on to illustrat a coat-of-arms in the best chamber window. (Perriam and Robinson citing Singleton 1677)
Gale is another small manor, partly in this parish {Melmerby} and partly in Ousby, which formerly belonged to the Huttons, of Hutton Hall, but is now possessed by the lord of the manor of Melmerby. Gale Hall, the ancient manorial residence, was rebuilt in 1866, and is occupied as a farmstead. (Bulmer)
