King records Nicholaston as a possible castle site mentioned in 1459. Spurgeon writes this may be no more than a scribal conceit and that no castle has been identified at Nicholaston. Probably the scribe was using the term castra in the sense of a manorial administrative centre and that the administrative building may well have been a simple dwelling and offices not necessarily decorated with military symbolism.
