Romans Castle is a roughly trapezoid/pentagonal enclosure, 78m by c.64m, defined by 2-3 lines of banks, much reduced, with a possible west-facing entrance, set upon a hilltop. (Coflein as Iron Age hillfort)

The monument comprises a small defended enclosure or rath, which probably dates to the Iron Age period (800 BC - 43 AD). Usually enclosed by a bank and ditch, raths often contsin evidence of intensive occupation. Roman Castle Camp is defended by double banks separated by a ditch. No sign of outer ditch or of outer bank on west. (Scheduling Report)

Gatehouse Comments

This site has been considered by some writers to be a castle but is rejected as such by Hogg and King as probably iron age. Scheduled as Prehistoric Rath.
