The earthwork that used to stand on this spot no longer exists and so there is no way of knowing exactly what it was. It was possible to find the site only because it is marked on the 1st edition 1886/1887, OS map of the area. Today all that is left is the overgrown and featureless mound. (Phillips)
Rogerstone castle, an ancient seat of the Morgans, is half a mile from Bassaleg: but few remains of the original structure now exist. The premises are in the possession of the Royal Mine Company, and occupied by a copper works. (Willet).
‘It was built by an ancestor of the Stradlings one of the twelve knights of fitz Hamon who assisted him in the conquest of Glamorgan. The Welsh called this castle Castell Gwilym’ (William’s Castle). (Morris)
