A natural conical-shaped glacial mound which from a distance much resembles a motte. Contains large rocks and boulders to the summit; grass covered.(SH83SW (M) , Ordnance Survey , 1974) Having seen the site, we remain uncertain whether it is natural or a motte. There are large rocks, but these could be a) because it is an improvement on a natural mound or b) they could actually have been used in its construction - it is not possible to say whether they are natural outcrops. A neighbouring area could have been cultivated; there is a good view up and down the river, and of Castell Carndochan; there is a suggestion of a ditch on the up hill side. The summit area however is very small. (Mason, 1991). Natural (?glacial) feature. (Geary, K., 1999, Tir Gofal Farm Visit). (Gwynedd Archaeological Trust HER)

Gatehouse Comments

The location is remote but just might be an outwork to Castell Carndochan given additional coverage of the route through the mountains along the Afon Lliw although it is more likely this is a fanciful interpretation of a glacial mound.
