Possible that there was an older castle here. Somewhere in modern town and, presumably, near parish church at given map reference or on site of later masonry castle. Gerald of Wales mentions a castle of Ruthlan in c. 1183. There are also Pipe Rolls mentions of a castle of Ruffin in 1160-64 (as a Fitz Alan property) and 1212. which may refer to this or some other castle (Castle Bryn-Amlwg in Shropshire, is suggested by Hogg and King in 1963)
