This site has been considered by some writers to be a castle but is rejected as such by Hogg and King. Recorded in Coflein as unassigned enclosure of unknown date. The Dyfed Archaeological Trust HER reports 'The shape and size suggest the possibility that this is a Roman fortlet or signal station, but its situation does not.'

Gatehouse Comments

There has been a distinct tendency to assume any card shaped enclosure is a Roman fort but Stephen Moorhouse in Yorkshire has shown medieval stud farms could take this form as could many other non-military features. The place-name may translate as the castle of the meadow of Wythan (the local river is the Nant Wthan) or the castle's meadow of Wythan, suggesting a meadow held in demense by the local lord, rather than the site of a structure.
