'Another tumulus' (Meyrick, p. 209). Said to be carted away about twenty-five years ago. (King, 1956)

Record in Coflein and Dyfed Archaeological Trust HER as 'Round Barrow' but with period 'Bronze Age; medieval'.

Gatehouse Comments

Tumulus was not exclusively used for burial mounds when Meyrick was writing but just meant artificial mound. However, the identification as a motte seems to be based on the placename rather than anything else. The location is isolated but could be a farmstead held by knightly tenure. Equally may have been a burial mound with the castell placename coming from a nearby Iron Age hillfort or just from a superficial resemblance to castle mounds. The name 'earth castle' does not suggest high status although is descriptive. Categorised in this database as 'possible' on King's authority only.
