Gatehouse Comments

A grant of murage is recorded in 1281, the same year as the town had its market and fair confirmed by Edward I. The murage was for the exceptional long period of 40 years which may reflect an understanding of how relatively little money this small market town would be able to raise from such a tax although, probably, the real function of the grant was as acknowledgement of borough status. Given map reference for parish church which should have been within any defences.
