Knoll location overlooking steep-bank Castle Dike stream from SE. Mound approximately 10' high, 25' across, in grounds just NE present house, appearing curiously prominent from hill-slopes to S, may be relevant to name as possible remnant of the some defensive work. (Sneyd 1995)

Gatehouse Comments

Castle Hill House is modern. This seems to be a natural hill just over the parish boundary in Oxsprings. The castle place-name does belong in Penstone north of Castle Dike but probably comes from Shepherds Castle
