The 1216 reference is to 'une forte maison' of Geoffrey de Saye. Geoffrey was a significant baron and Magna Carta surety but his lands were mainly in Middlesex. Was this was a warehouse (with some accommodation) in the town of Rye allowing access to European markets and built to protect goods rather than a 'castle' (either in the sense of a fortified residence or a political/administrative centre)'? Ypres tower may be a replacement or another later house of a similar sort. The exact location is not known but will certainly have been within the town walls. Given map reference for parish church.
