The Castle is the name given to a slight raise on the edge of Barton Fell. There is however no known archaeological reason for the name. (Lake District National Park HER)

Gatehouse Comments

Close to the 'High Street' now a footpath over the fells but possibly originally a ridgeway (It is marked as a Roman Road on the OS map), but can never have been a major route. Travellers using such a route, such as pedlars and drovers, would have needed to give names to even quite small features to aid navigation. However, this was clearly never a castle site in the sense of any form of fortified structure.
