Listed by Thompson as a residential manor of the Bishop of Winchester. Payne writes 'It seems unlikely that Alresford, Hants was the site of an episcopal palace, as suggested in Thompson's gazetteer (1998: 186), because the parish adjoins Bishop's Sutton where there was a well-documented episcopal residence (VCH Hants 3: 41).'

Gatehouse Comments

The C18 Old Alresford House is on the site of a medieval manor house beside the church. The attached 16 hectare park was laid out in the C18. Despite being next door to Bishop's Sutton Alresford was the centre of a different hundred. Was there a medieval park? Is Payne right to dismiss this as the site of a medieval bishop residence? Was this the site of auxiliary accommodation, a stewards residence or a palace of a different period from Bishops Sutton or some combination of these?
