Appears in Brown's list with footnote "Mappa Mundi only". No Goseford at all in OS place-name gazetteer and no Gosford, Gosforth or Gooseford in Surrey. The given list by Gervase of Canterbury is "Goseforde, Farnham, Reigate, Blechingele."

'Surriensis' (1789) states as mentioned by Speed.

Gatehouse Comments

Given Gervase's list Gatehouse is the opinion this must be a reference to Guildford castle. Indeed, the only question is what reason is there for such an obvious identification not being made by Brown. The lack of mention by the other usual authorities (i.e. David Cathcart King) suggests the identification with Guildford was made by them. Doubtful as a separate castle from Guildford. Unfortunately I've been unable to track down a copy of Derek Renn's article of 1968 which may well have other relevant information.
